Parallelism

The not .... but .... shows contrast. They should be parallel.

=> not X but Y : X and Y should be ||.

In original sentence:

X : in a flash of inspiration ( PP )

Y : evolved                          ( V )

Correct option :

did not spring to life in a flash of inspiration but evolved slowly
